A first-timer’s guide to the Dolomites

When to go, what to pack and how to choose a trail that fits your pace.

The Dolomites are generous to first-timers. Cable cars take you high quickly, the paths are well marked, and there is nearly always a rifugio with a view and a plate of dumplings at the right moment.

Choose a valley, then stay put.

It is tempting to move every night. Resist it. One good base with a cable car and a bus stop opens up a week of different walks without the daily packing.

Pack for four seasons in a day.

Summer afternoons bring storms. A light waterproof, a warm layer and shoes with grip cover most situations. Start early and be off the ridge by mid-afternoon.

Pick trails by hours, not kilometres.

Ascent matters more than distance. A three-hour loop with 400 metres of climbing is a comfortable day for most walkers; double the climb and it becomes a serious one.
